What I Get?

Our youngest granddaughter was recently potty trained.  Early in the process she was at our house and let me know she needed to use the bathroom.  When she was done, she asked "What I get?"  It took me a minute to realize that she was looking for a reward that I figured was probably a part of the training process.  I found a piece of candy corn and all was well.  When her mom returned, I then learned that the "treats" had been discontinued since she had really mastered the process.  But that has not stopped the requests.  Each time she visits and she uses the bathroom her question is "What I get?"

I have the joy of teaching homeschool teenagers high school math.  Whenever we come up to a vacation time I challenge the students to complete all their assignments at the beginning of the time, rather than put it off until later, closer to the time for class to begin again.  And, of course, I provide an incentive, which comes in the form of 2 Lindor truffles.

I had to laugh when students asked one of the recipients of the reward if it was worth it.  His response was enthusiastic.  "Oh, yes! It's heavenly!"

But it got me thinking.  As believers, we are promised much in the future.

Not only do we currently have access to the Throne of God through the torn veil of Christ's flesh, where we can find mercy and grace in time of need, but even now has He given us His Spirit to lead and guide, convict of sin, and comfort in times of sorrow.  Even now has He promised to never leave us nor forsake us.

But then, but then, we will see Him face to face.  We will see our living, risen Lord who gave Himself for us, who died so that we could have unlimited, unrestricted access to God,who died so that He could reconcile us to God.  We will see Him.

But then, we will have immortal bodies.  We will live on a new earth that He will create for us and dwell with us.  The King of Kings and the Lord of Lords living and dwelling among men who are His reward, His inheritance.  Can you imagine?

Can you imagine no more tears?  No more sorrow? No more pain?

Can you imagine no end to time? Do you ever run out of time or energy??  Can you imagine that we will no longer say "I don't have time for that." We will have eternity!

So when we are tempted to despair, when we are tempted to be discouraged, when we are tempted to focus on the temporary instead of the eternal,  we just need to remember to ask ourselves, "What I get?"
