Évian-les-Bains

Or maybe I should entitle this blog, Hilton Evian-les-Bains, because that is the main reason why we came to Evian in the first place. Oh yes, we hadn't been to this part of Europe nor to the area of Switzerland nearby, both of which we have wanted to do. But as we have been planning various short trips away we've taken advantage of Bob's Hilton Points to stay places for free. Over the last few years we've stayed in London, Paris, Vienna, Innsbruck, Malta, Rome, Florence, and Venice and even Spokane, Washington! We're still looking to squeeze in a visit Prague as well, now that it's no longer on the "might move there list." We've stayed at the Hilton in Zurich, but those visit were IBM business trips, not vacations. If you need a rundown on the details of any of these, just let us know.

Évian-les-Bains is home of the bottled water by the same name. When in town, however, there is no need to purchase bottled water. The spring's source is available in the middle of town and is free to all. It was a real surprise to have free unbottled water brought to the table when we sat down the first evening at a restaurant. That just doesn't happen in Europe!!

Located on the French side of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva on the Swiss side), Évian-les-Bains is a little village built on the side of one of the mountains that rises above the lake. Sitting on the French side you aren't able to enjoy this breaktaking view. That's what you see from Lausanne, the Swiss city directly across the lake. But the view out over the lake is still quite enjoyable. We were able to enjoy breakfasts on the terrace located on the top floor, quite a relaxing way to start the day. The weather cooperated while we were in town, unlike earlier in the week when it had been days of heavy rain. Last summer it seemed like most of the rain fell during the week and the weekends were nice. This year it seems like it rains every other day! Manuela, my language tutor, tells me this is the norm. Ah. I will be grateful for every sunny day that comes our way.
