Dueling Roosters

Directly across from our apartment (about the 10 meters away) is a home that appears to have been here in town for quite a while. There is a small barn attached to the house, with a breezeway between, that is directly across from our kitchen balcony.

The family owns four ducks, two dogs, two dwarf goats and a slew of chickens, most of them with these strange-looking (well, at least to me) feathered feet, including now, not just one, but two roosters.

The chickens are a different variety than this family previously owned. I'm assuming the other chickens went in a pot somewhere, although we can't verify that fact. All we know is that when we returned from the states in March, our neighbors had new chickens, and then a few weeks ago added at least a dozen chicks. (So wish I could get a clear picture of them. They are still kept inside, so I've tried to photograph them, but it's through chicken wire and another smaller screen. Just too unclear to post.)

The roosters often seem to try to out "cock-a-doodle-do" one another. And this time of year especially, as we live in a typical Swiss residence, no air conditioning, we often get to enjoy this serenade. For those of you who have not had the privilege of living near roosters, no, they do not just crow at sunrise. Try anytime the sun is up.

The other day Bob was working from home and it was one of the first times that he has been able to be entertained by the dueling roosters. I think he was entertaining thoughts of putting one of those roosters in a pot of his own.

It's so wonderful to experience the varied culture, traditions, lifestyles, around us! Do you really think that you could put him in a meal pot. My mom grew up with farm yard animals - not pets mind you. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Well, it has been a long time since I helped go from live chicken to cooked bird and I would rather not do it again!! lol

But I think after an hour of dueling roosters, Bob had had enough. ;-)
