Meiringen

(Okay, I know this post is out of order...but I'm trying to record, at least for a future scrapbook our time in Switzerland as completely as possible. So your patience is appreciated!)

Did you know that meringue was invented in Switzerland??? Neither did I, until Bob informed me that he had decided we wouldn't stay in Zürich for Easter weekend and that he had booked us into a hotel near a ski slope, hoping there would be enough snow left for us to go snowshoeing. As I checked out the town on the web, I learned of its "claim to fame." According to Wikipedia, the notion that meringue was invented here by an Italian chef named Gasparini is contended. But you wouldn't know that wandering the streets of the town, as meringue cookies and desserts are in every bakery and cafe. Although he didn't find Lemon Meringue pie in town, Bob did manage to find a bakery that served a wonderful lemon tart.

It is also famous as the town closest to the dramatic Reichenbach falls, which was so fascinating to the author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, that he decided it would be the place of the presumed death of his famous fictional character, Sherlock Holmes.

We headed out on Good Friday morning and knew that it was to snow. What we didn't expect was the amount of snow we would encounter as we headed over Hasliberg Pass. Apparently the pass had been closed until just before we began to cross the mountain. I was very grateful for Bob's expertise on snowy roads. The car in front of us as we headed down, on the still unplowed side of the road, didn't appear to have snow tires as it slid a portion of the way down, including almost sliding into a snowplow! Thankfully my hero got us down safely.

Bob had suggested to take our skis along "just in case there's enough snow." Enough snow was not a problem. We hiked up the mountain behind the hotel after dinner and decided to spend Saturday skiing Hasliberg. (The base of the ski slope is at 1050 meters, which the top is at 2433.)

With so much fresh powder, the slopes were very enjoyable and the views were awe inspiring. The lake which you see is Brienzersee, the lake to the east of Interlaken. Bob had fun using his GPS watch to track our ski speeds as well as the speed of the chair lifts.

The weather the next day appeared to be overcast and possibly more snow, so we decided to do our snowshoeing this day. This was a first for me, as the last time we had planned to do this was over Christmas and I ended up with the flu. Snowshoeing is great fun, although it can be a bit on the tiring side. Just a bit. :-)

Yet, another beautiful area of Switzerland. Where do the Swiss go to vacation???
