Find Your Wings
"I pray that God will fill your heart with dreams
And that faith gives you the courage
To dare to do great things
I'm here for you whatever this life brings
So let my love give you roots
And help you find your wings"
I had heard this song many times and had always associated it with parenting, with allowing our children the freedom to move on in the direction that the Lord was leading them. However, there is another aspect of meaning for me now.
It was played as part of Steven's Commissioning Celebration for his graduating class at Moody. The lyrics were first read and then the song was played as the young men and their wives (or in the case of the lone single pilot, his fiancee) stood outside the hanger at Felts Field, just prior to the release of doves, symbolizing their "flying off."
I couldn't help but think of all those who had invested their lives in these young men and women, many of whom were standing around us. Their parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, extended family, flight instructors, godly men and women whom the Lord had brought alongside them. And many others who were not there that night. People who loved Christ and therefore loved these young men and women and have poured into them in order that they will be equipped for what God has in store for them. They, along with me, are praying that these young men and women will indeed have the faith to follow God. There is nothing more encouraging to hear that those you love are walking with God.
I also thought about the roots they had been given. Roots gained through teaching them to ground their lives, their decisions, their thoughts in God's Word and His truth alone. Roots developed by attempting in word and deed to model a life focused on the eternal, on the truths of scripture. Roots that were nourished and water for many years. Oh may those roots in God's Word go deep. And may you soar.
