Zermatt!

Ah, snow, glorious snow! And the views aren't bad either.

Today was a day to take many different forms of public transportation. We took the elevator down out of the apartment, and then walked to the bus stop just down the street. We took the Post bus as far as the Oberglatt train station where we caught the "Urban train number 5" into the Hauptbahnhof (main train station in Zurich where we did some quick shopping and rode another form of transportation, an escalator!) From the Hauptbahnhof we transferred to an InterCity train to Visp. From Visp we took portion of the Glacier Express (cog) train to Zermatt where we caught an electric car taxi (only vehicles allowed in town) to our apartment for the week. Whew.

It was snowing from Visp on and so we didn't seem much of the surrounding moutains, but the snow covered trees were breathtaking. In the morning we awoke to find that the Matterhorn was visible from our living room window! It was clear and the lifts were beckoning. After a quick breakfast and ski rentals for Dawn and Steven, we took a ski train, a gondola, and a cable car to reach our first run for the day. (And we were still on the Swiss side! The ski resort includes areas on the Italian side of the mountain, but for all but one day while we were there, the Italian side was fogged in and closed.)

Steven began giving Dawn some basic lessons and we headed down the slopes that were covered with awesome powder. (Does it get any better? Great views, clear weather, great temperatures and wonderful powder??? Okay, some in the group were looking for moguls, but to my way of thinking, it doesn't get any better than this!)

We skied some runs together and then allowed Steven to assist Dawn to get more time to become oriented to skiing at a slower pace than some in our group care to travel. ;-) We met back up at lunch time at Trockener Steg. The guys skied some on their own in the afternoon, while Dawn and I did some more "turn practicing" on some easier runs. (Add T-bar and chairlift to the forms of "public" transportation used!) What a day.
