Well, now we can say we've skied the Sierra Nevadas, the Rockies (Thanks, Daniel and Angela! Sure glad you lived in Denver for a couple years!!), the Appalachians (hmm...not sure we should include this skiing??), and the Alps! Although this has been an usual year according to the locals, the ski slopes located within a few hours of Zurich opened in mid-November!

We hiked in the Flumserberg ski area on the first day that the slopes opened. That day was bright and sunny and we had wonderful views of both the mountains and the lake (Walensee) which is at the base of these mountains. I guess that is unusual as well. This area often has clouds stretching to mountains on both sides, covering the lake. One of Bob's colleagues says he has never skied at this resort when it has been anything but overcast.
When we arrived , it was somewhat overcast at the lake level, but you could see the mountain peaks. However, as the day advanced, the clouds filled in

the area between the two moutain ranges, so most of the day we were actually skiing above the clouds, although in the last photo , you can see what it looked like from one of the lift areas, about halfway up the mountain.
Only a portion of the ski resort is open at this point, with the expert portions being closed much to Bob's disappointment. One of us was very content with the intermediate slopes that were open.
The skiing was quite different than the Colorado or California resorts we've skied at. The trails are, for the most part, quite wide and well-groomed, but absent are the moguls that you

expect at US ski resorts. And so, the type of skis are different as well. You also see many skiers wearing helmets, probably important because of the speed at which they are tearing down the mountain!
The beauty of the area is spectacular! The rugged peaks were beautiful in the summer time, but with snow on them, they are even more spectacular. I have felt like I need a new set of words to describe beauty in Switzerland. In German, many times words are combined to form a new word, for example in the next door town of Dielsdorf there is a Horse Sports Complex. Well, they join the word for horse (Pferd), the word for Sports (sports) and the word for

center or complex (zentrum), so that it becomes the Pferedsportszentrum. Maybe I should do the same and call the scenery here as awesomegorgeousspectacular! What a magnificentmarvelouscreative God we serve!
