Vienna: Votivkirche

Another Gothic church, the Votivkirche, located on the Ringstrasse (a road which encircles the Old Town of Vienna), was commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph after a failed assassination attempt on his life by a mentally ill tailor. He ordered the church built on the spot where the attack happened. The tomb of Niklas Salm, leader of the Austrian army during the mid-fifteen hundreds is inside this church. As this church is make out of white sandstone, it has to be constantly renovated to protect it from air pollutants which tend to color and erode the stone. The church was completely closed up while we were there and did not appear to have been open for some time.
